As children, we’re constantly tasked with telling the truth, yet at the same time we immediately begin bombarding our children with conflicting statements: Santa, Tooth Fairy, Easter Bunny, etc. I set out in the fall of 2009 to test the range of emotional responses and aggregate effect on social media accounts of being honest. I set the stage months earlier for the experiment by starting “no filter Friday” an experiment to see whether people could grasp true honesty in a business endeavor. I also piqued the interest of quite a few new followers by conducting a smaller scale experiment. Both went perfectly according to plan.

An experiment in which I lost the ability to have “balanced rational discourse”
In midsummer I began planning the biggest experiment yet, an experiment in which I lost the ability to have “balanced rational discourse”. Or to put it another way, I became as intolerant as many of the “popular” twitter accounts I saw. I didn’t lie, I merely took the extreme view of whatever my actual opinions were. Which for those who know me, I’m already unabashedly liberal I just took it to the “if you don’t care about people more than anything else you’re evil” level. That was only a part of the experiment.

The other harder part was to always tell the truth. I did have a major setback in feeling confident about the experiment when, due to a combination of multiple factors, my marriage ended. While it hurt immensely, I eventually decided to resume work on the experiment. I hinted at the experiment in the weeks before it started and discussed it with a couple of my close friends before deciding that come hell or high water on Dec 21st, 2009 I would begin. My twitter account was now ground zero for a whole new type of experiment (years and years ago I lived as a homeless person in Portland, Oregon for 6 weeks because I wanted to see what the actual effects on my own personality would be).

A few people including Pete Grillo, Steven Mcdade and Thomas Brenneke came perilously close to making me ‘out’ the experiment throughout 2010. My one rule to maintain telling the truth while taking an extremist tack was the same as used by Project Alpha: If asked why I was required to tell the person asking. Thanks to a few of you for keeping it secret by the way!

Portland is more about speaking up than it is about partisanship.
Due to a rather nasty server issue I lost all of the data I’d been aggregating of my own tweets, interactions and follow/unfollow counts. While still a massive setback the raw data numbers weren’t the main focus of this experiment. Detecting the initial problem (an outdated script incompatible with a recent update to the server) was difficult due the script failing silently. When all was said and done I had the first 3 months of data and the last 5 weeks, the interim data was simply gone. I was faced with a tough choice: Throw away a lot of work that did alienate friends and coworkers or do an accelerated version of the experiment in a single 24 hour period. Since I believe that knowledge is so important I took it upon myself to regain the lost data. I did so the second Saturday in January and took it to a much higher level than I had before. Ratcheting up the rhetoric without crossing my own personal line of advocating or threatening harm to anyone. Given the heated nature of the topics a few friends reacted hurtfully (and with logical reasoning too).

Unsurprisingly the end of the year conclusions came out fairly staid:

People under the age of 25 are vastly more likely to positively respond to reactionary statements.

People identifying as monotheists are more likely to unfollow when their ideologies are questioned or insulted than polytheists or atheists.

People who use their faces as avatars are less likely to deviate from a moderate tone in their tweet stream.

The amount of unengaged accounts went up at approximately the same ratio as my daily number of tweets. While many of these accounts aren’t necessarily spam it does indicate that neophyte users frequently just follow anyone in the stream who says things that they relate to. Nothing out of the ordinary there really.

The number of spam accounts did spike rather heavily (up 23% the first week no less) as I began using more hashtags and keyworded phrases.

One fact I’m quite proud of is that my fellow Portlanders were the group least likely to unfollow me based on my statements. When I looked at the data closer the numbers of “loyal” followers were split fairly evenly between liberal and conservative users. Which led me to conclude that Portland is more about speaking up than it is about partisanship. Not everyone in Portland may agree but they won’t necessarily unfollow you for it.

At the 6 month mark I ramped up to following a large number of adult performers, strippers and cam girls throughout the world, again surprisingly Portland accounts took offense at a much lower rate than other cities.

At the 9 month mark I began cycling on a 48 hours rude and 24 hours polite rate which resulted in very little differences to the statistics over time but did cause some upheaval during the switch from one state to the other.

The few really interesting realizations occurred in the way many of my long term friends and some quiet acquaintances changed the way they saw me over that year. Especially interesting was the group of people who publicly said one thing but privately said another. It speaks volumes about how even though we’re told to tell the truth as children, between the age of being a child and being a fully fledged grownup we lose those abilities to always be honest.
Of my personal favorite responses and results were:

An active social media using tech executive from California regularly sent me a DM whenever I took certain topics to task thanking me for “saying what he would get fired for”.

A VP of Marketing from a NYC based company sent me an email that read in part “Some of what you say is obviously calculated to get a response but nicely doesn’t come off as blind trolling. It would be nice if honesty of the level you approach was something marketers could capitalize on”.

A former student from my drumline teaching days called me to ask if I was really that angry at the world and if there was anything they could do to help.

After going through the data and realizing that a lot of what our parents taught us is true, that how you speak affects how well you’re listened to I realize that the greatest lesson wasn’t the specifics of the data. My experiment was never about collating the many into a grand unified theory of sociology, it was about how the circle of friends and acquaintances I have change and adapt over time. Everyday our personalities go through varying degrees of flux. It’s a natural part of being human, what we must all learn to do is be honest to ourselves and to everyone else without remorse. It’s not a real decision if you’re not invested in it.

While I’ve got much of the data aggregated now I’m not able to share the full report at this time. When you blindly involve people in an experiment you don’t have a right to arbitrarily decide how to use their public identity. I’ll try to figure out a way to sanitize it enough to not force many people to have their information shared as part of this. I should add that I also am under an NDA which prevents me from releasing anymore data at this time. I will say thanks to the very cool company that liked the idea and paid me for the researchas well as provided me excellent resources for getting the missing data restored as much as possible. Thanks guys!

I feel enriched and also deeply humbled by the gamut of emotional responses to my words, my deeds and especially the number of new friends I made during the experiment.
To those of you who helped voluntarily or as subjects I say thank you very much.

We all did, every single American, all of us. From the depths of Southern Georgia to Northernmost Alaska, from Allentown, PA to Santa Clara, CA. Americans rose up and voted their hearts, their dreams and their minds.

The turnout nationwide was massive. Early voters, and those brave noble souls who stood in line for hours in rain and sleet together did something historic. No matter if your candidates won or not, America proved the worthy nation that she is to everyone across the world. We may not be perfect, we may be unbloodied but we spoke together united as one, united in our abilities to speak our minds, our hearts and to exercise that right that makes us the grand democracy that we are.

To those many thousands that volunteered, working phone banks, fundraising, and working the polling locations across this great nation, I say on behalf of my wife, my two sons and myself: Thank you.

In more partisan news: My entire family is stoked beyond belief that the candidate who has the mix of qualities that will return our nation to that of respect throughout this whole world once more emerged the victor in a historic race.

The first black President, the first democrat to win both the popular vote and electoral college since Jimmy Carter. Now that the color barrier has fallen in the highest level position you can hold in the free world, the last black President. This election has proven that it’s not about the color of your skin anymore. It’s about your ability to do the job of governing the greatest country the world has ever seen, and guiding her through triumph and adversity in a way befitting her stature.

President Elect Obama, the people have spoken. We believe in you, we trust in you and we’ve got your back to give you all the help you need to untarnish our country, don’t let us down.

I wanted to make sure that both boys could see my favorite corps (The Santa Clara Vanguard) play for their first real drum corps experience. So for this years vacation (aka hanging with the California family) I made sure that it happened during the big DCI West show. I can’t wait to see their reactions (or Zoe’s reaction since it’ll be her first show also). I’m going to make sure they get some nice souvenirs as well as an up close and personal view of the parking lot experience (watching the drumlines warmup)

For those who have no idea what Drum Corps is (go see a show!) here’s a parking lot video from the 2007 season (go SCV!!)

They’ll get to see:

The Santa Clara Vanguard

The Concord Blue Devils

Phantom Regiment

as well as many more corps!

Also a quick shoutout to my good friend (and former Cascade) Tim who’s in SCV as well as Stephanie LaRue who’s also a fellow Cascade who made the change down to SCV. Good luck this year folks!

Well that’s it for now. Time to get my butt in gear and head out to California for the holiday weekend.

The following release has not been proofed due to time constraints.

Transparency group Wikileaks forcibly censored at ex-parte Californian
hearing — ordered to print blank pages — ‘wikileaks.org’ name
forcibly deleted from Californian domain registrar — the best justice Cayman
Islands money launderers can buy?

When the transparency group Wikileaks was censored in China last
year, no-one was too surprised. After all, the Chinese government
also censors the Paris based Reporters Sans Frontiers and New York
Based Human Rights Watch. And when Wikileaks published the secret
censorship lists of Thailand’s military Junta, no-one was too
surprised when people in that country had to go to extra lengths
to read the site. But on Friday the 15th, February 2008, in the
home of the free and the land of the brave, and a constitution which
states “Congress shall make no law… abridging the freedom of
speech, or of the press”, the Wikileaks.org press was shutdown:

BANK JULIUS BAER & CO. LTD, a
Swiss entity; and JULIUS BAER BANK
AND TRUST CO. LTD, a Cayman Island ORDER GRANTING
entity, PERMANENT INJUNCTION

WIKILEAKS, an entity of unknown form;
WIKILEAKS.ORG, an entity of unknown
form; DYNADOT, LLC, a California
limited liability company; and DOES 1
through 10, inclusive,
[..]
IT IS HEREBY ORDERED:

[..]
Dynadot shall immediately clear and remove all DNS hosting
records for the wikileaks.org domain name and prevent the
domain name from resolving to the wikileaks.org website or
any other website or server other than a blank park page,
until further order of this Court.

The Cayman Islands is located between Cuba and Honduras. In July
2000, the United States Department of the Treasure Financial Crimes
Enforcement Network issued an advisory states stating that there
were “serious deficiencies in the counter-money laundering systems
of the Cayman Islands”, “Cayman Islands law makes it impossible for
the supervisory and regulatory authority to obtain information held
by financial institutions regarding their client’s identity”, “Failure
of financial institutions in the Cayman Islands to report suspicious
transactions is not subject to penalty” and that “These deficiencies,
among others, have caused the Cayman Islands to be identified by the
Financial Action Task Force on Money Laundering (The ‘FATF’) as
non-cooperative in the fight against money laundering”. As of 2006
the U.S. State Department listed the Cayman Islands in its money
laundering “Countries of Primary Concern”.

The Cayman’s case is not the first time Wikileaks has tackled
bad banks. In the second half of last year Wikileaks exposed over
$4,500,000,000′s worth of money laundering including by the former
president of Kenya, Daniel Arap Moi (see
http://wikileaks.be/wiki/The_looting_of_Kenya_under_President_moi
which became the Guardian’s front page story in September 2007 and
swung the Kenyan vote by 10% leading into the December 2007 election
and http://wikileaks.be/wiki/A_Charter_House_of_horrors reported
in the Nairobi paper The Standard and now the subject of a High
Court Case in Kenya).

To find an injunction similar to the Cayman’s case, we need to go
back to Monday June 15, 1971 when the New York Times published
excepts of of Daniel Ellsberg’s leaked “Pentagon Papers” and found
itself enjoined the following day. The Wikileaks injunction is the
equivalent of forcing the Times’ printers to print blank pages and
its power company to turn off press power. The supreme court found
the Times censorship injunction unconstitutional in a 6-3 decision.

The Wikileaks.org injunction is ex-parte, engages in prior restraint
and is clearly unconstitutional. It was granted on Thursday
afternoon by California district court judge White, Bush appointee
and former prosecutor.

The order was written by Cayman Island’s Bank Julius Baer
lawyers and was accepted by judge White without amendment, or
representations by Wikileaks or amicus. The case is over several
Wikileaks articles, public commentary and documents dating prior
to 2003. The documents allegedly reveal secret Julius Baer trust
structures used for asset hiding, money laundering and tax evasion.
The bank alleges the documents were disclosed to Wikileaks by
offshore banking whistleblower and former Vice President the Cayman
Island’s operation, Rudolf Elmer. Unable to lawfully attack Wikileaks
servers which are based in several countries, the order was served
on the intermediary Wikileaks purchased the ‘Wikileaks.org’ name through — California registrar Dynadot, who then
used its access to the internet website name registration system to delete the records for ‘Wikileaks.org’.
The order also enjoins every person who has heard about the order
from from even linking to the documents.

In order to deal with Chinese censorship, Wikileaks has many backup
sites such as wikileaks.be (Belgium) and wikileaks.de (Germany)
which remain active. Wikileaks never expected to be using
the alternative servers to deal with censorship attacks, from, of
all places, the United States.

The order is clearly unconstitutional and exceeds its jurisdiction.

Wikileaks will keep on publishing, in-fact, given the level of
suppression involved in this case, Wikileaks will step up publication
of documents pertaining to illegal or unethical banking practices.

Wikileaks has six pro-bono attorney’s in S.F on roster to deal with
a legal assault, however Wikileaks was given only hours notice “by email” prior
to the hearing. Wikileaks was NOT represented. Wikileaks pre-litigation
California council Julie Turner attended the start of hearing in a
personal capacity but was then asked to leave the court room.

White signed the order, drafted by the Cayman Islands bank’s lawyers without a
single amendment.

The injunction claims to be permanent, although the case is only
preliminary.

Wikileaks remains available publishing from non-US, non-Chinese
jurisdictions including http://wikileaks.cx/ and http://wikileaks.be/.

Here’s a letter from former Presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich that’s quite appropriate to the topic. We’ve hit a point where it’s not about political affiliation anymore. Democrats, Republicans, liberals and conservatives should all gather and watch as the founding principles of our nation are systematically destroyed (think I’m exaggerating? check out sites like rawstory.com (mainstream media in the US rarely broadcasts anything that goes against Bush anymore).

“Dear Supporter,
Today is the sixth anniversary of my “Prayer for America” speech. Please take a moment to read the speech or watch it on YouTube:
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=8528466337 …

In light of the events that have taken place since I wrote and delivered it on February 17, 2002, you will see that long before anyone else in Congress saw the danger our country was headed toward, I spoke out — truthfully and forcefully.

I need your help to continue to be the voice of the people. My primary election is on March 4th, just a little more than two weeks from now. Today’s newspaper is reporting, once again, that I am being outspent heavily in my efforts for re-election. What is not said is where the money is coming from: Corporate interests whose narrow concerns do not allow for peace, for health care for all, for workers’ rights. I can and will continue to speak out with your support.

The working men and women of my district are working hard to protect this seat, which belongs to them. They are going door to door throughout the neighborhoods of the Cleveland area. Just yesterday, hundreds of dedicated citizens from all walks of life fanned out all across the District to spread the word about the importance of holding on to this Congressional seat so their voices will continue to be heard and represented in Washington.

With a million dollars being spent against us on negative ads, false claims, and misrepresentations, we need additional funds to make sure that our message gets on television, radio, and through the mails.

Please contribute as generously as you can at http://www.kucinich.us/contribute.html to ensure that the people continue to be represented in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Let our Prayer for America on this day in 2008 be one of determination that we will save our government — and this Congressional seat — from corporate control.

Dennis”

Great words from a true American. On the positive side the internet is ours. By ours I mean every free thinking person on the planet with access. We will NOT be stopped. There are already dozens of mirrors of wikileaks and every other site dedicated to telling the truth. Strike one site down and hundreds will rise to speak out against tyranny, fascism and other anti-freedom acts. Now if you’ll excuse me I’m getting back to teaching my son what America is really about (it has nothing to do with worshipping the government blindly).

I love art with a political bent and especially love work in the vein of altering signs and billboards. The CDC is a private correctional facility that protects the public through the secure management, discipline, and rehabilitation of California’s advertising.” These secretive folks, who communicate only by anonymous email and speak mainly in riddles are artists and geniuses. But their work speaks for them, and it is a series of artfully-”corrected” public billboards with biting and poignant messages. The California Department of Corrections has a nice gallery of retouched billboards showing a more honest vision of what America means today.

Well the first week of Seattle Cascades All Days are in the can and in that time the kids have done about as much work as you can possibly cram into 8 days. While they’ve dealt with rainouts and injuries (as the picture illustrates) we’re all hungry for success this year. It always surprises me that everyone always seems to work harder today than they ever have before. Ah the magical infinite energy of youth lol.

So far I personally have driven from beautiful rustic Mt. Angel, (which is home to the best Octoberfest in the country) up to Seattle and back in one day while picking up the souvie truck and switching vans. Also have done quite a few hospital runs in addition to driving all over the place collecting last minute props and supplies to ready the corps for the big tour. Only 2 days remain before we start out on the road. Next stop will be a quick one two punch to the northern California cities of Stockton and San Jose. After that some relaxing fun in the sun in Ashland Oregon and then back to our home stomping ground of the Pacific Northwest.

I’m really looking forward to seeing the art of the show performed for a big audience since the interaction between members and the audience always seems to result in a massive upswing in the confidence and performance energy. Nothing sounds quite as sweet as the screams of happy corps fans (note: the unhappy screams are usually due to unforeseen circumstances like earthquakes and the walking dead; The walking dead thankfully are a very rare occurrence) Also looking forward to seeing how we’re going to stack up against the competition since we already know we’re winners, for some reason DCI likes to tell us whether or not we’re right about it ;)

My brain has been overwhelmed a bit with new ideas for designs and much photographic goodness. When I have a chance I’ll be putting up a wallpaper based on the drumline and maybe brassline shortly thereafter. Regardless of all of that it’s been great fun so far and I’m looking forward to writing more as internet time becomes available.
